Explorations into traditional plate camera photography.
Retiring from professional photography has opened up a new venture which I have never had time to explore. It kind of begun with a recurring desire to image in the way that I had learnt in college, studying photography and admiring the photographs of Dorothea Lange and Julia Margaret Cameron's whole plate images. Although during my working career, I have never imaged using whole plate format, it has always been beguiling for its beautiful dimensions and complete fit within the standard large image book publication.
Enough about me. What is a whole plate? What is plate photography? I thought I knew, although perhaps that kind of knowledge is only true insofar as it is knowledge about something, rather than technical knowledge of application. Seeking to use a whole plate camera to image, I decided to take this journey back into the Victorian era of photography a little more casually by starting off with a half-pint measure: the half-plate camera.
Admittedly a camera log-blog isn't the best way to chart an exploration into plate photography. However the bandwidth is free. Looking forward to posting and finding any other plate camera users out there with similar intrigue in the 19th century plate camera.
